Look, say what you want about Freedom—and I’m not sure if I’m ready to, yet—but it’s clear that Richard Katz’ chewing tobacco addiction is a tribute to David Foster Wallace, and every time it is mentioned in the novel, I couldn’t help thinking of Franzen’s and Wallace’s relationship, and how touching I found it that he put that detail to the guy in the book.

  1. agrammar said: His more humorous dialogue feels Wallace-inspired too, here. I feel like I haven’t seen many genuine haters of the book — people who hate the idea of it, or its press, or its role in the world, but few who finish and don’t think it’s a good read.
