My take on Kanye-Swift 2010. Lots of fun typographic bleeps!
“Runaway” is multi-valent. The title puts a name to the aimless, homeless-in-the-world feeling Kanye’s obsessed with. Split into a verb, it’s a warning to the women in his life to get away from him. It starts, “I always find something wrong / You’ve been putting up with my s—- just way too long,” and it doesn’t let up. The first verse is about him sending a girl pictures of his d—-. The chorus acerbically toasts all the d——-bags, a—holes, s—-bags, and j—-offs. It’s a sure thing that West’s pouring some out for himself. The lyrics all point like a needle to the true north of Kanye’s deplorable behavior. Pusha T’s verse is a toned-down version of his Clipse style: After running down all the luxuries of his life, he invites his woman to leave if she can’t face the steep cost, which is presumably his d——-bag behavior.
