Amoral Fable

An old man in Suriname, a recent widower, walks to the market. In the middle of the road he finds in a red velvet sack $1,000, a relatively large sum for the country. His low spirits are buoyed by this piece of good fortune, and he decides to treat himself to something nice. When he reaches the market, he goes to the fishmonger and draws $25 from the sack. The man wants to purchase the freshest, largest fish steak available, but the fishmonger’s wares looked disappointing. He goes to the butcher looking for a finely marbled, juicy steak, but again the offerings look poor. Finally, the man goes to the baker hoping to find some fresh bread, but as it’s late in the day now, everything is hard and going stale. The old man sets off to his home, disappointed that he couldn’t find any pleasing treats, but his spirits are still high from his financial windfall.
