To Rawkblog, on Either-Or

This is pretty good! I think the point of not having listened to this before, it’s really interesting. It’s because there’s way too much music. Like, it reinforces your point in a way. I’ve never shunned Smith, and I do have his mp3s in my iTunes. But the scant I’d heard of his didn’t make me want to listen to it over All Hail West Texas, you know? Because it’s so hard to get away from the known fixes. It’s like, music listening gets to be very mechanistic or Protestant-predetermined after a while: put on this album to feel this emotion; put on that album to feel that emotion. But the great thing about music — and art — is that it surprises you! It makes you feel, and please, now I sound very cheesy to myself, but, it makes you feel feelings you didn’t know existed. In fact, I didn’t really know what “All Hail West Texas” even felt like until I heard it, and then I felt it.
