Martin Douglas' Favorite Albums of 2011 That He Wasn't Obligated to Write About Elsewhere: Atlas Sound - Parallax

douglasmartini:

I’ve cried many times while listening to this record, from end to end. I used to think about my life and its utter worthlessness, and Bradford has an intrinsic knowledge of what that’s like. There are things about abject loneliness that you just can’t explain to people with words, but where Bradford does with music. It sometimes sounds like you’re on an island all by yourself when listening to Parallax. He openly talks in interviews about how he has no life because of music, how making music is the one thing that keeps him alive, because he would seriously have nothing without it.

This thing Douglas wrote about Parallax, an album that frankly doesn’t do anything for me, is basically the definition of the five paragraph personal essay. It starts in a wide shot, zooms in, and then ends elegantly. It makes you appreciate its author, of course, but its subject even more, which is the point of writing about things.

For those keeping score (what does the score card look like? I kind of need to know!), my ‘Parallax’ album is Youth Lagoon’s The Year Of Hibernation. It sort of always makes my eyes well and dampen, and I don’t know why. It just sounds like what the inside of you seems like it’s supposed to sound like. But I’m going to listen to Parallax some more, and hopefully be not devastated by it.
