Cake - She’ll Come Back To Me
Cake’s one of those bands that has about four plotlines going at any one time — kind of like Gossip Girl, and similarly insane. Try listening to Frank Sinatra or Stick Shifts and Safety Belts without laughing from the sheer ambition of it all.
This song is similarly ambitious, coupled with the typically heartbreaking lyrics. “If she wants him more than she wants me, let this be/she’ll come back to me” and “All day I wait/to hear her footsteps on my walk/she never came/she never even called” are especially gut wrenching. In the same vein as Jewel’s “You Were Meant For Me”, the song captures that time after a break up when you’re just positive that it can’t be over, but the lyrics belie what the singer already knows.
Yeah, except for when she does come back. Because sometimes she does.
