The Free Model Works: Forest Fire’s Survival is #9 in Rough Trade’s “Top 10 of 2009”
Back in June 2008, we (as in Catbird Records) released Forest Fire’s Survival— as a FREE 320kbps download.
- At the end of ‘08, it was named La Blogotheque’s “Album of the Year” (beating out something called Fleet Foxes by some band called Fleet Foxes).
- In 2009, it was picked up for Europe by the venerable Talitres (home of the National, the Walkmen, and others).
- Then it was picked up for the UK by Broken Sound Recordings.
- Then, it got full US re-release treatment from Brooklyn’s Infinite Best Records.
And now, as I mentioned, it just cracked the Top 10 in Rough Trade’s 2009 Albums of the Year List (BTW, an album called Merriweather Post Pavilion made the list too— at #11).
So, I just want to take a moment to be totally sincere and say: I’m so proud to have been a part of making all this happen. It’s a long way to come for an album that started it’s life as a FREE download, and that, since the beginning, has been pretty largely ignored here in it’s home stateside. Congratulations, Forest Fire.
