This song, unlike Knopler’s hamfisted attempt, is perhaps one of those ars poeticas about the workaday origins of music. It’s a song about making a song, one in which Cake is, somewhat ironically, the composer who gets the work from the Austrian nobleman, who is both the Austrian nobleman and the peasants.

It’s like that painting with the guy in the silly hat and the slippers on the floor.
