I prefer this bon mot to Sartre’s more famous l’enfer c’est les autres. It may sound sophisticated to compare life to some sort of neverending bourgeois party (Buñuel makes it hilarious, too), but it’s important to keep in mind that the maxim is universal. It only takes two people thinking hell is other people to damn everyone. Everyone is damned.
