I came across this post on Twitter and it hit on something bouncing around my head that I haven’t been able to articulate. I saw the Donald Glover / Childish Gambino show Friday night and came out of it thinking that it was fun and energetic but still not moved to listen to his music more the way an equally fun and energetic normally would. There are things that I like, but the complete product seems to be less than the sum total of its parts.
I said it to Jenny before and after the show - he’s a clever dude and is skilled behind the board, and if he ever decides to rap about more than just girls, he’ll probably become a really great MC.
