It wasn’t until I read Adam Gopnik’s “Talk of the Town” the other day that I learned the Statue of Liberty is standing on the broken shackles of slavery. It’s right there. I don’t know how I never knew that. It’s kind of amazing to me, though, all in all. America’s most well-known monument is a commemoration of the abolitionist movement.
