Das Racist
“I’m Up On That” (feat. Homeboy Sandman)
There is so much cool shit going on in this song. Kool AD stretches out a bit. Homeboy Sandman belies his silly name by doing pretty well. Lots of race stuff. Lots of humor and pop culture stuff. Heems has a verse that’s not like particularly good, but “LARPing” always cracks me up.
I’m not paid in full. I’m paid in part.
Off my art. Off my smarts.
In a Starter jacket I spark.
I’m so sharp I look sharp while I LARP.
I’m a pretty, like, well-disposed person, but sometimes I feel like my child-like creativity, purity, and honesty is honestly being crowded by these grown thoughts. I’m sick of dreary rap. Shabazz Palaces, for all its bleakness, also sounds like a celebration of life. (No new age-mo.) I like life! And celebrations! What’s wrong with that? Nothing, is what I say. Fun-sounding music can be insightful. And if it is, then great because it’s insightful. If it’s not, then at least it’s fun.
