The Questionable Intent of Bill Keller's Genius (Or: Why I've Flipped On Odd Future)
I woke up groggy. The sun is shining. Cars are driving. And then (yeah, checking Tumblr today was pretty early in my wake-up routine), yeah then what do I see?
I see that Foster renounced Odd Future.
I don’t think Tyler’s homophobic, and I don’t think he’s violent. But after reading Kelefa Sanneh’s New Yorker piece on Odd Future, I don’t think he’s entirely aware of what he’s doing, and to ever think he did was, in foresight, [sic] a pretty dumb miscalculation on my part: He’s an angry, pissed-off 19 year-old. No matter how talented and how much of a genius you are, no 19 year-old is that enlightened.
Gee whiz, you think? If your argument ever hinges on a teenager being a genius of empathy and a master subverter of baked in, thousands of years old social structures, then you’re just spinning out rope to figuratively hang yourself. I mean… TS Elliot wrote a ham-fisted work of genius about being an old man, but at least he was like almost thirty by the time he got that done.
Anyhoo… Just your latest indication that the world is ending today or soon.
