Ok, this is the freshness I was talking about earlier.
I don’t think that Jay-Z is the best rapper alive, but I think he’s the most important philosophically. With recurring themes of death and self-identity, I think he’s definitely the most Derridean rapper. He realizes that meaning is inherently tied up with death—i.e., absence. Jay-Z’s physical absence from the myriad strong projects that have sprung up around him makes him, paradoxically, more and more present. Presence through absence. He’s pure utterance. Pure breath. Word is bond.
